Accountant

  • Use an accountant (recommended) — keeps the accounts and files the VAT return and annual accounts. Fill in Who and their Organisation number. Only state-authorised accountants can be registered; they are told, and confirm the engagement themselves.
  • I will do it myself — with accounting software. You then meet the deadlines yourself.
  • Decide later — an accountant can be added after registration. The company must keep accounts from day one either way.

Auditor

  • No auditor (common) — most new, small companies may opt out of an audit, and the choice is recorded for you.
  • Choose an auditor — if a bank, an investor or a customer requires audited accounts. Fill in the auditor and their Organisation number; they confirm the engagement themselves.

Whether a company must have an auditor depends on three thresholds in the Companies Act — revenue, balance sheet total and man-years — and most new companies are well under all three.
